There’s a renewed sense of momentum across Indiana’s small business community. You can see it in new storefronts opening in downtown districts, first-time entrepreneurs launching companies, and established businesses reinvesting in the communities they serve. Even amid economic and workforce challenges, many small business owners across the state are choosing to move forward with intention and confidence.

That optimism matters. Small businesses account for 99.4% of all businesses in Indiana, employing approximately 1.2 million Hoosiers—more than 43% of the state’s private workforce. Together, they form the backbone of Indiana’s economy and the vitality of Main Street communities from Indianapolis and Fort Wayne to Evansville and smaller rural towns across the state.

Indiana’s small businesses may be manufacturers, retailers, service providers, or digital-first operations, but they share a common reality: long-term success increasingly depends on being digitally prepared, secure, and flexible enough to adapt as customer expectations and economic conditions change.

Technology Has Become Part of the Business Foundation

Running a small business has never been simple. Owners balance rising costs, staffing shortages, regulatory requirements, and customer demands all while managing day-to-day operations. In that environment, technology shouldn’t create more complexity. When it does, it quickly becomes a barrier to growth rather than a growth driver.

What we consistently see working with Indiana small businesses is that success today isn’t about adopting the newest tools, it’s about building the right technology foundation to support how a business operates and plans to grow.

Connectivity Is Now Core to Small Business Operations

Internet connectivity once felt like a utility line item. Today, it supports nearly every part of a small business. Digital payments, cloud-based point-of-sale systems, inventory management, online scheduling, guest WiFi, and employee collaboration all rely on fast, reliable connections.

This is especially important in Indiana, where the overwhelming majority of businesses have fewer than 50 employees and depend on cloud-based tools to stay efficient and competitive. When connectivity isn’t aligned with how a business actually works, productivity can suffer and customer experiences are impacted.

Right-sized, reliable connectivity allows technology to fade into the background so owners can focus on serving customers, retaining employees, and growing their business.

Practical AI Is Helping Indiana Small Businesses Do More with Less

Artificial intelligence is no longer limited to large enterprises or tech companies. Across Indiana, small businesses are already using AI in practical everyday ways like automating inventory alerts, improving scheduling accuracy, managing customer inquiries, and reducing time spent on administrative tasks.

The most effective uses of AI aren’t flashy. They quietly simplify operations and free up time for higher-value work. None of this is possible, however, without a secure and reliable digital foundation. Strong networks remain the cornerstone that allows AI tools to deliver value without adding risk or operational strain.

Cybersecurity Is Now a Business Continuity Issue

As small businesses become more digitally connected, cybersecurity has become unavoidable. Cybercriminals increasingly target smaller organizations, knowing that limited resources can make them more vulnerable and that the cost of downtime can be devastating.

Today, security must go beyond a single firewall. It needs to protect WiFi networks, cloud platforms, mobile devices, and connected equipment. When security is built in from the start, small business owners gain peace of mind and avoid costly disruptions that can stall growth.

Flexibility Is a Competitive Advantage

Hybrid and mobile work models are no longer exclusive to large companies. Many Indiana small businesses now rely on a mix of in-office, remote, and on-the-go work to meet customer needs and attract talent, especially in a competitive labor market.

Supporting that flexibility requires secure access to systems and data from anywhere. Businesses that invest early in cloud-based platforms and secure connectivity are finding it easier to stay productive, adapt quickly, and grow without sacrificing control or security.

When the Foundation Is Right, Growth Comes Easier

The small businesses that thrive aren’t chasing every new trend. They’re investing in secure, flexible, and scalable technology foundations that align with where they are today and where they want to go tomorrow.

At Comcast Business, our role is to take the complexity out of technology so Indiana small business owners can focus on building strong roots in their communities.
