About our speaker

Mel Raines has more than 25 years of strategic communications, political and government affairs, community engagement, and operations experience.  With a strong operational background, she also has federal government experience at the highest levels of Capitol Hill and the White House.  Mel was the first female Executive Vice President in the history of the NBA franchise and now serves as President and Chief Operations Officer for Pacers Sorts & Entertainment, leading Corporate Communications, Community Engagement, and Facility Operations functions in addition to serving as the President of the 2021 NBA All-Star Local Organizing Committee.  She is on the executive leadership team and oversees a full-time team of more than 50 professionals in addition to several hundred part-time event employees to execute over 555 events and meetings with more than 1.7M guests each year. 

She began her career on Capitol Hill in the office of U.S. Senator Dan Coats (R-IN) and later served as Vice President Dick Cheney’s Assistant for Political Affairs in the White House as well as Chief of Staff to U.S. Representative Susan W. Brooks (R-IN). She has worked full time or consulted on six Republican National Conventions from 1996–2016 and, in her role as COO of the 2008 Republican National Convention, played a critical role in organizing, managing, and producing the convention that the Associated Press called “a model of efficiency and organization.”  

In 2021, Mel was recognized as  Game Changer by the national Sports Business Journal, and in 2019 she was named a Woman of Influence by Venues Now magazine and received the Nancy A. Maloley Outstanding Public Service Award by the Richard G. Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series.
