Carmel, IN – The Carmel Police Department is proud to announce the expansion of its police headquarters on Gradle Drive at Range Line Road. The 31-year-old building is set to triple in size, making room for more officers and other city offices.
The Carmel City Council approved a $38 million bond for the expansion (along with other redevelopment projects) and that bond will be paid using local income tax distributions. City taxes will not go up because of this project.
The new building was designed in partnership with Studio M Architecture and Planning. Construction is set to begin in the Spring of 2022 with an anticipated date of completion of January 2024.
The existing building has 26,937 square feet of space and was opened in September 1990. At that time, Carmel Police had 49 sworn officers and 17 civilians. Today we have 134 sworn officers, 25 civilians and four part-time employees, so the new space will be a welcome and much-needed addition. When construction is complete, the new building will have a total of 74,742 square feet and will house the City Court and Clerk’s office.
